Abstract. This work examines little-known facts from the life and creative heritage of Hasan Chergeyev, one of the most respected Crimean Tatar populist poets of the twentieth century. To reveal the semantic and linguo-stylistic features of his poems “Listen to What the Dead Man Says!” (“Eşit, mevta ne sevleyur!”, 1909) and “Fate” (“Taqdir”, 1917), the author carries out a comparative-typological, semiotic and textological analysis of the original texts. The poet's strategies for depicting authentic, dramatic episodes from the life of the people and the clergy are analysed, and the impact of idea, theme and storyline on the structure of the poems is revealed. Lateral thinking and specially selected ways of representing life material turn the poet's works into living canvases that reflect the depth of the characters' inner experiences and the natural flavour of the vernacular.
