An anthology of literary and journalistic works published in the newspaper “Millet” (1917–1920).
▸ The project to digitise the archives of the Crimean Tatar national newspaper "Millet" (1917-1920) and turn them into an anthology aims to fill a major gap in Crimean Tatar culture and history. Owing to repression under Tsarist Russia, the deportation and exile (1944-1989) and Soviet censorship, the original materials of "Millet" are fragmented, hard to access and scattered across different archives (Russia, Germany, Crimea, etc.). Bringing these materials, written in Arabic and Latin script, to today's readers and making them a source for academic research is of vital importance.
▸ The project will help us better understand the state of Crimean Tatar national identity, politics, culture and economy in that period and will be a valuable resource for historians, researchers and educators. Its main source is more than 400 newspaper issues held in the State Archive of the Republic of Crimea (GAARK). The project will enable more effective use of Crimean Tatar literature and journalism in academic research.
